Professor Stephen Westland

Professor Stephen Westland is the Professor of Color Science and Technology at the School of Design, University of Leeds, UK. He has held several senior management roles at the university, including Head of the School of Design and Dean of the Faculty.

Professor Westland has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters in the fields of color measurement, color imaging, color design, and machine learning. He is the lead author of the book Computational Colour Science Using MATLAB (2004; 2012) and co-author of The Universal Principles of Color (2023).

He served as President of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) in 2019. In 2008, he was awarded the Davies Medal by the Royal Photographic Society for his research in color imaging. He is the Founding Academic Editor of the Journal of the International Colour Association (JAIC), serves on the Editorial Board of Color Research and Application, and is actively involved in the AIC/ISCC Color Literacy Project.
